Liver Disease and Transplant Program

The liver disease and transplant program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital offers a complete range of medical and surgical interventions to treat patients with complex liver disorders including liver disease management, end-stage disease treatment and liver transplantation. Treatment of complex liver disorders requires the skill and experience of a dedicated team of professionals. Of the more than 120 liver transplant programs in the United States, Northwestern Memorial ranks in the top 10 percent of all programs in the number of liver transplants performed. We have been recognized for our success with new immunosuppressive agents that help reduce post-transplant complications. We are one of the few hospitals in the midwest to perform laparoscopic resections of liver tumors and laparoscopic procedures in patients with cirrhosis. And we are the only hospital in Chicago with a dedicated Comprehensive Liver Cancer Clinic.

A Multidisciplinary Approach
From diagnostic procedures to transplantation, Northwestern Memorial's team works together to assure the best possible patient care. Our liver program includes the largest dedicated hepatology division in the country with a team of surgeons and transplantation specialists, gastroenterologists, interventional radiologists, infectious disease specialists, oncologists, psychiatrists, nurses, dietitians, social workers and financial counselors. These specialists meet weekly to chart the best course of treatment for each patient.

Our team sees each patient individually and performs a comprehensive assessment to determine risk factors and then develop the best treatment plan. We work closely with patients and their families to answer questions, educate and provide guidance about treatments and procedures. In addition, we help patients and families manage post-hospitalization care by working with primary care physicians to improve each patient's quality of life.

Clinical Research
We are one of only nine centers in the country participating in a study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health to assess living donor transplantation. Our physicians are also involved in several clinical research trials to improve the treatment of patients with diseases of the liver.
